I was able to catch your show at the Harvest Moon festival in Spanish Fork. I really enjoyed it even if it was cold outside. My Dad was a singer and would perform at venues like that. He passed away unexpectedly a few months ago and to hear you play reminded me so much of him that I had to tell you thank you.

Congratulations on your recent Pearl Award! You so completely totally deserve it! (Dude... Why is that news nowhere to be found on your website? C'mon - brag a little. You earned it.)

Great to see you again. I loved the live CD it was nice to hear you talking it felt like you were in our living room. A friend wanted to know who you were and how did I know you. I said, "I only hang with famous people". Thanks again Sandy & Kyle

We were at a concert you gave in Edmonton, Alberta and my husband absolutely loved your music. Most of the songs you sang were going to be on your new CD which I cannot find. Is it out yet, and if not, when is it coming?? It would make a great christmas present!!

Hey David,

Nice to hear from you. Haven't seen you since high school! "I get no kick..." paraphrasing (if I remember right) Blazing Saddles, correct? Indeed, "a website, and concerts, and all kinds of stuff." It's almost as if I grew up to be a working musician. Send me an email (off the guestbook. Click on "contact" above) if you'd like to catch up.

Thanks, Jordan! The Snowbird show was lovely, lovely. We were very glad to have you there. Ryan, Kevin and I had a terrific evening, and boy, are you ever right about the setting. Really breathtaking. Thanks for visiting, and for your post. Good luck with the upcoming little one!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert at Snowbird tonight. Your music combined with the beauty of Snowbird and Little Cottonwood proved to be an extraordinarily outstanding evening. While we enjoyed being introduced to your music last September at Sundance the smaller less formal setting proved to be an exceptional experience. Thank You!

Just bangin' out a few chords from my favorite all time Sam Payne song (still "Quiet Nancy"), and thought I'd visit your website. Continuously looking forward to the time when "the pirate song" might be rerecorded or rereleased. I always weep (a little) when "the boy [locks] her dead in his gaze." Guess I'm the boy with the sea in my eyes at that point. Good to see you at the Cheney's concert.

July 20, 2007

Hi!
I have come with my daughter Meg to you Brigham Young Park Concert the past 2 years, and we were there on the 17. I was wondering if your song Sweet Lilburn and the last one you sang about your sons line of authority were available anywhere. I loved those songs! Well, you were great and we had so much fun! Thank you!

It was fantastic to see you on Saturday at the Cheneys. I heard you mention something about an audio file of the Hosea love song. I would deeply appreciate it if you could send me a copy.

It was good to be with all my Weber friends and be listening to your music again. I look forward to seeing you at some of the Utah Valley concerts in the next few months. I hope you and your family are well and happy.

July 7, 2007

Hi Sam,
I wanted so badly to go to your concert on the 4th! Alas, the two 6 year olds and the 3 year old I was with wanted to play with cousins instead. I heard it was awesome, though. My friend John, went and he wanted me to tell you that you have a new fan! Your CD's are great, but your stage presense adds so much! It is so fun to see/hear you live! I'm coming to your gig on the 17th.

July 2, 2007

Hey! I've come to your Brigham Young Park concert for the past two years, and I'm going again on the 17. I was wondering if you could play Brothers Road. That is my favorite song and I love to listen to it live! See ya soon!

I'm listening to Railroad Blessing right now at work and got wondering if your lyrics were posted online. Sadly I couldn't find them anywhere (any chance of putting on your website?) but then wandered through your site. I'm happy to see you visit my hometown (vernal) to play for the seminarys there.

I love your work. My friend introduced me to you when I moved to St. George and saw you at first night. Keep up the great music!

Hi Bro. Payne
I enjoy your Sounds of Sunday program very much. Today (6/10) you played a song that I think might be titled "It's all from you"? Could you tell me who the artist/ group to that song is.
Thanks!

May 24, 2007

Hey Bro Payne,

I was following links on Meridian Magazine's site, saw your dad's column, and decided to google you. Here you are!
Just thought I'd say thanks for being the kind of seminary student teacher (Bonneville High 94?) who inspired goodness in me, and whom I still remember with a smile.
I thought of you just the other day when I was teaching my 2 1/2 year old son Isaac what it means to scatt. He loves jazz--mostly because I tell him he should, and show him how I do, and because dancing with his mom to a little duke ellington seems to be a highlight in that sweet, short life--has been in mine. You may have only done it once or twice, but your scatting in class is one of my most vivid memories of that year. Seriously good fun; we all pretty much thought you were off your rocker, very disarming. Lovely how music permeates life.
So now I'm a "grown-up". I have a 9 month old too, Ian. My incredible husband, Wes, and I are in Salt Lake. I get to be at home with my boys (after teaching junior high for 2 1/2 years--english and french and drama + track coach), and I am passionate about my current carreer.
I served a mission to Sweden, and met Wes at Weber State. We're living the life the Lord promises to those who try to be good--immeasurably happy, plenty prosperous, and routinely challenged.
Glad to see you are well. I believe you deserve it.

all our best, and greetings to Eliza,

Brigita Robertson and family

May 23, 2007

Hello, My name is Monica and im sure you get alot of request for you to crate a song for someone. I hope you will take a minute to read my story. My husband was killed in a tragic car accident in Jan of 2006. He was a wonerful man who loved everyone, my son was in the car with him and his brother was the drive it was a one car occident in a huge snow storm and I was on the phone with him when the accident occourred. We had a large family with 12 children. When Steve and I meet he had 5 children of his own and I had 4 we later had a wonderful son together and Steve adopted my 4 children we was also granted custody of my neice and nephew making an even dozen. Steve loved his family with all of his heart and it donent seem fair that he was taken so soon from us with such small children still needing to be raised. I have been trying to find something that would be speical to my children that when they seen or heard it would be something that they could say that is my daddy. There is alot of wonderful stories I would love to share with you and help you crate a wonderful song in memory of a wonderful man who is missed very much. After going to one of your concerts I was inspired to e-mail you and ask you this very special request. I hope you will find it in your heart to help me.
Thank you again for taking the time to read my story. May God bless you and your family. With love from a mother and a wife.

On your Sunday program you have a female singing a song that I havn't been able to find.
Part of the lyric is "He's in the wind, He's in the rain"
Her background music has clicking effects.
I have been trying to contact Randy Rose on how to get in touch with you, and finally decided to try a web site, and there you are.

Hey stranger! I'm so proud of your success! I saw you last Winter on TV, either Good Things Utah or Studio 5. You have made me very jealous, since I haven't done much with music since Weber. We just moved to Vernal, do you ever come out this way? I would love for you to come and do a Fireside (if you do them) ARe you still a Seminary teacher, on the side of course.... take care! :) Tori

Thanks Cheri! I'm glad you like "Everest." It means a lot to me. The song is from "Railroad Blessing," but if you heard it on the website (from the "Live at Spiral' recording) you got a much different version! Again, I'm very glad you liked it.

Cheri Lott

March 16, 2007

Wow! I just listened to "Everest". I don't recall ever hearing it before. I really like it. Which album is it on? I suppose music is at times like scriptures. You can read the same passage many different times in your life, and it will only stand out when it touches something pertinent in your life at the time. Maybe I have heard the song before but this time I was just able to feel it. This time it reached me. Love your songs Sam. You are so talented. Thanks!

March 13, 2007

Sam,

I am Eliza's friend; had a nice chat with your wife at Eliza's wedding in Alpine.

Question for you: I'd love to get a copy of the song you sang for Eliza at Snowbird (yes, night of her wedding). Is is on one of your albums?

Incidentally, happy to see on your site -- you are indeed writing for your day job. I loved the piece you wrote/read that same evening (Snowbird). I too love to write.

Hope all is well with you and yours,

It was a pleasure to see you again, down in Kayenta. Ahh memories of the good old days at the St. Geo. art fest.

I have a CD of the images I took in Kayenta here in my hand. TSome of the images are large raw files so it would be dificult to send them via email.

Send me a mailing address and I'll send them along.

January 12, 2007

Saw you open for Peter Breinholt last September. As you took the stage I leaned over to my date whispering, 'I am convinced the soul purpose for an opening act is to make the main performer sound that much better. In all my concert goings I have yet to see a quality opening performance.' At the end of Autumn Leaves my date glanced in my direction expectantly to which I replied, 'I stand corrected, this guy is amazing!' It's January 07 and I am still listening, waiting for an album that includes Leaves and Favela. Best of luck!

Sam jango...
been a fan of your pop's for a zillion years (and knew him in anciect Provo - BYU era)along with my brother who left us due to a disagreement between his motorcycle and the desert on the west side of Utah Lake in 1975.
You are now on my list of ipod tunes that accompany my wife and I on our nightly walks (not to mention my practice sessions on my drums!).
Love your music - you're inspiring me and my band cronies on to greater things and sounds in our vast "rep-e-twa".

Thank you for your beautiful song Beleive In Him. I heard it at your Education Week inspirational concert and loved both the lyrics and your presentation of them. Just incredible! I had to have a copy of the song! Lucky me, I got one of the last copies in the bookstore.

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. Thank you. Have a great day.

Annie, thanks more than I can say for your post. It's a blessing to have grown up in a family of parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles who believed that "breathing healing" was one of music's most important functions. All my love to you and the gang.

November 18, 2006

Well, Sam... you've saved my life today. Worn out from "mom" duties, and overwhelmed by an extremely stressful week, I turned on the computer and discovered your live tunes from the Bean House Concert. Nourishment. Fresh air. Peace. And beauty. All of these had been in short supply today. Thank you for decorating the airwaves of my cluttered office (and my cluttered brain) with love songs from Hosea, and lots of sunflowers.
Nice to know someone who can breathe healing with his music. -annie (the "aunt")

Just bought Railroad Blessing, and have to say it's some of the finest music I've heard in a long time, on many levels. And yet I struggle. Should I let the inspiration take me and try yet again at creating my own music or just enjoy the deep satisfaction of letting those few artists like you express my own deepest artistic yearnings far more eloquently than I can ever hope to for myself. Probably will just do both. It's all good.

I'm sure you get tired of hearing it, but I hear your father in your work. But I also hear Michael Franks, Sting, Don McLean, Dave Matthews, and many others. Including (wonder of wonders) a unique voice-- let's just call THAT...Sam Payne?

While not a big "LDS music Market (with a capital "M") fan, I also enjoyed the recent interview on "Cricket & Seagull" podcast. You seem well spoken and well grounded, with a strong gospel perspective that informs your work without wearing it on your sleeve. I like that.

Looking forward to seeing you in Alpine (and hopefully other) performances this Christmas season. As a timid neighbor and fan of your father for over 30 years, I take great vicarious pleasure in seeing the maturation of another generation of strong musicians who actually have something worth saying and say it so well...

All the best,

KH

Keith,

Good eye! I played a Breedlove SD-20 in Texas. I've had that guitar for about two years, and I've enjoyed it very much. It replaced a reliable old Taylor 410 (which I also enjoyed very much).

Thanks for coming to those shows. We had a terrific time in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and would come back in a heartbeat.

November 2, 2006

dear Mr. Payne,
I was at the Concert on October 20th at the Will Roger's Auditorium and enjoyed it thoroughly. My Wife, Daughter and I also attended the Youth Fireside you and the other artists performed at and was just inspired. Great Spirit and Fun. Thanks for Sharing your Talent with us here in Texas and we hope to see youo again in the not to distant future. By the way we loved the song you wrote for your Child. Beautiful. I would be a bander too if I could play my guitar that good. Anyway , Thanks again and Bless you.
By the way, was the guitar youo used a Breedlove? it kinda looked like one.

Terry,

During the era you speak of (early 1970's) I would have been the slobbering kid banging mason jar lids togeher on the kitchen floor. I'm pleased and humbled and inspired to be one point on a line that includes both my father and my Father.

Thanks very much for your kind post.

I "grew up" in Provo after my mission while rooming with my brother, Larry Bird who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1975. Larry knew Marvin Payne. Through Larry, I had the opportunity of also getting to know Marvin.
I can so hear your father's seeds in your voice and your creativity. Not only do I try to emulate your father when I sing, but now you also.
Thank you for exploring your gift given by your father and your Father.

Hey! Just wanted to give a Texas-sized "Thank You" to our new friends in Colleyville. What a wonderful weekend. We had great audiences, and were so well cared for that my heart is full and none of my pants fit anymore. So to the Crocketts, the Hicksons, the Lansfords, and everyone else who showed us such a terrific time--thanks, thanks, thanks.

Hey Sam,

We just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful house concert! It was a blast! You made it a great birthday. We hope to see more of you soon. We also loved hearing Ryan Tilby. You are both so talented and fun to listen to.

P.S. I agree with Mark Pinson. We really enoyed your version of "Climb Every Mountain" and would love to hear it on an album.

Mark Pinson

September 23, 2006

My wife and I saw you at the Education Week Inspirational Concert. We really enjoyed your singing. We especially enjoyed "Climb Every Mountain". We have the version sung by the nun ( what's her name :) ) to Julie Andrews but we would like your version. Do you have any plans to put that on an Album? Is there any place to get a recording of you singing it? We have bought one album and will probably buy all your albums. Thanks for the great singing.

Sam Payne

September 22, 2006

Rachel! Great to hear from you. Me, a wonderful teacher? Chalk it up to my wonderful students! I'm grinning that you remember that I used to say you look like my brother! Great, great times. I'm glad you enjoyed the Meridian article, and my thanks to your mom for passing it along to you (especially since without it, you might never have written)! Most of all, I'm happy that you hear my testimony when you hear the discs. It's all there, you know, and since sometimes it's couched in a language of poetry and grooves, I always jump for joy when someone sees it all down there. Thanks. Again, great to hear from you.

Rachel Crosby

September 12, 2006

Brother Payne!
How's it goin!? This is Rachel Crosby I don't know if you remember me, I took seminary from you at DHS...you told me I looked like your brother! Oh good times. Anyway, my mom just e-mailed me an interview you had with Meridian Magazine because she thought I'd enjoy it. It was so great, and I just thought I'd drop you a line! Now, the chances of a big celeb like yourself reading some random comment from a student 2 years ago, might be quite small.:)Nonetheless, I hope if you do get a chance to read this, I would love to tell you how much I gained from taking Seminary from you! You were such a wonderful teacher and now I get to hear your testimony every time I listen to your CD's. Congrats with all your success and hope everything is going just splendidly! I can't wait for another CD!

I saw you preform at education week. I loved your sound and your music. The best were the sections when you weren't really saying any words, just dee da do.. and so forth. Your sounds voice reminds me of James Taylor, which reminds me of my Dad. Thanks for your music!

Spectacular performance at Sundance. You have amazing talent! Please keep up the performing and song-writing. I am in awe!

September 11, 2006

Sam,

Your performance at Sundance was the first I'd ever heard of you, but we were blown away. (We ended up buying your CD instead of Peter Breinholt's!) Autumn Leaves was a particular delight -- I'm very pleased to see it available on your website.

Keep up the good work. I'm hoping you have more concerts in the near future; we've told all our friends about you, and want to see you live again.

Thanks!

September 10, 2006

Sam,
Friday's show was magical. Perhaps the best part was the opportunity to be exposed to such talented artists. Your music in particular was a golden discovery. Taking a theme from the movie "Shrek", it is like an onion. So many layers, the deeper you dig the richer the meaning. We bought “Coming Just To Go” and have probably listened to it a dozen times. You can guarantee that I will be introducing all of my family and friends to your music. Now all I need is more of your music. Please let me know when “Railroad Blessing” is back in print.
Thanks,
Jeremy

September 9, 2006

Thanks to all those who came out to the Friday night Peter Breinholt show. We had a great time, and look forward to tonight! There's no better place to see a show than the Sundance Amphitheater, and we were happy to be invited to be a part of Pete's terrific show. Thanks also for buying the recordings. This month caught us off-guard with a sell-out of "Railroad Blessing." We're thrilled that you've responded so well to that album, but embarrassed at not having any more on hand. We're making more!

Thanks, Kathy! You're very kind. I love doing the show, and I'm happy you're enjoying it. And thanks Jenny as well! I was happy that Meridian Magazine could make use of that interview, and glad that John Newman asked for it in the first place. Also, thanks to those who came to the Ed Week shows, house concerts, the zoo, the wonderful Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, and TOTO in Sandy (what a blast). I've had fun corresponding with some of you who have posted. We've had a great couple of weeks, thanks to our terrific audiences!

I just saw Sounds of Zion preform at BYU Ed Week. You have a unique style and a wonderful voice that I could listen to all day. Infact, I bought your CD and have listened to it atleast once a day since then. I wish you well in your life and musical venture... and when I get back home I'll be trying to find you a venue to play at in Colorado Springs, CO. Thanx a ton for sharing your beautiful talent.

Sam, We just moved from St George to Norman, Oklahoma, but we were fortunate to hear your music several times while we lived in Utah. If you EVER get the chance to play in Oklahoma, please do so! I play your music at work all the time...it's great! Steve Flaig first introduced me to your music. I was his Human Resources manager at Mikohn. Keep it up...

I had fun at your concert at the zoo last night. It was fun to dance to your music and I really liked the music. So did my sister and my grandma. We are going to buy one of your CD's. Naomi Ashby (8) and Neena Ashby (5)

Thanks for listening, Jim! The song you're thinking of might be "Our Father Needs Him There," by Lyndsi Houskeeper. She's a terrific inspirational songwriter, and she lives right here in Southern Utah. The song plays often on the Sounds of Sunday. I'll tell Lyndsi you like it, or you can contact her yourself at www.lyndsihouskeeper.com

I Love Sounds of Sunday! On today's show, this morning, a song came on about a mother who lost her young son. I didn't catch it all, and didn't hear it again. What's the title, and sings it?

I'm sure the folks down in St. George would love to hear you more, and I would love it even more if you came to Salem Oregon for a concert. Wish I was closer to see you perform again.

I saw you perform yesterday at the Brigham Young Historic Park. You guys were so COOL -- and I think I'm in love with Drew. ;)

The pirate song was my favorite -- is it on any of your cds?

Sam, how do you scat like that? And your sister was amazing too! -- did you guys learn to do that together? Until recently, I was a member of the Bingham High Jazz Choir. We were all a bunch of total greenies at Jazz -- more like, we were choral singers attempting to sing jazz -- so, despite the workshops in Moscow, and all the times I managed to get over my inhibitions in class and give it a shot, I could never quite get the hang of scat. Any tips? Does it help to know theory?

Ben! You're welcome, and thanks for the kind words! It seems silly saying this (after all, we live there), but we ought to play in St. George more often.

I had the chance to see you in St. George a couple of years ago and ever since I have been a huge fan. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Best of wishes to you and your family. Thank you!
